Gluttony Shark

I make sculptures that illustrate human dynamics. The Gluttony Shark demonstrates how we use media to target our gluttonous tendencies. I took the similarities between eating machines (the vacuum cleaner), sharks (prehistorically stalled beings on the evolutionary path and ravenous devourers), and consumers (including all of us to some degree). I combined these qualities to create a functioning shark vacuum cleaner. Then, I presented this "product" using the same media used to target consumers, the QVC home shopping network. I used the physical action of a vacuum cleaner and connected it to the style and beauty of the shark. The Gluttony Shark is made of sections wrapped in my old t-shirts to represent my own gluttonous tendencies to accumulate an excess of clothes. With the creation of this piece, I hope to get people, like myself, to think about the Gluttony Shark when they feel the urge to overindulge.
